- Subject: ARRL ORder Desk Problems?
-
- I was wondering if any one else has had problems with the ARRL order desk
- in respect to phone orders. I have had problems the last two trys. Once I
- was double billed for one order - and that took over a month to get
- corrected. This last time I ordered a copy of the 1994 dig. conference and
- a number of 1994 QEX issues. I received the billing two weeks later on my
- visa but had not seen the books so I waited another week before calling in
- case they were in the mail. I was told they had no record of my order. As
- before I was told to copy my visa statement and send it in and it would be
- delt with.
-
- Now - about three weeks after having sent the copy of my statement in ( I
- know the mail is slow - but this slow?) I had heard nothing so I called
- the order desk again. Once again they had no record of the order or my
- letter. This is close to two months after the original order and the
- solution is once again - send another copy of my visa statement to them.
-
- This seems to be a little too much - by the time I pay for the calls, mail
- etc the costs are going to be quite high and I am looking at no resoulution
- for 2 - 3 more weeks perhaps. Is this a common problem with the ARRL
- publications group in others' experience? I would have to say I could not
- recommend this method of ordering to anyone else esp when I am billed but
- there is no record of the order even.

- This strikes me as a very good point. In CT we have a very
- solid repeater club. They run a great repeater, we have a few
- foxhunters, and a few packeteers. The membership seems to be
- looking for more activities, but the club is interested in running
- repeaters. Point being... the club has no responsibility to meet
- any other needs. There is no implicit democratic structure, and if
- you don't like it, find a club that fits your needs.
-
- You will find a different make-up from club to club, and finding
- one that does the things of interest to you will (may) take time.
- I recommend asking some current members about activities, support,
- rules, and organization prior to shelling out any cash. If you do
- join and don't like it, just let your membership lapse. pretty simple.

- From: ham@wam.umd.edu (Scott Richard Rosenfeld)
- Subject: OMNI-V and grounding problem?
-
- First, the background for my story:
-
- Second story ham shack, no cold water pipes, about 20'
- to nearest Earth ground, maybe more.
-
- Antenna is a dipole in the attic, just overhead. Don't
- worry, I keep to QRP.
-
-
- Equipment:
-
- Ten Tec 961 power supply, Ten Tec OMNI V, MFJ-949 tuner,
- MFJ-931 arti ground with counterpoise wire.
-
- Symptoms:
-
- With radio, power supply, and tuner in use, no ground braid,
- touching the front (bare aluminum) of the case causes the
- Power output meter (and reflected power AND Ic) to increase.
-
- Transmitting into the dummy load results in no fluctuations
- when touching the case.
-
- When the ground braid is hooked up, joining the radio, power
- supply, tuner, and arti ground (no counterpoise hooked up yet)
- the problem is still present, except that simply touching ANY
- portion of the ground braid causes the fluctuation to occur.
-
- Obviously, it's not that any part of the case is floating.
-
-
- CONTINUING: HOOKED UP THE ARTI GROUND...
-
- Tune for maximum ground current, and when achieved, the
- case should be "at relative zero potential." Touching
- the case STILL has an effect on the meter. Actual power
- output (forward) at the tuner is not affected, although
- the rig shows higher forward AND reverse power and a
- higher Ic.
-
- If one fiddles with the arti ground capacitance controls,
- it can usually be set such that touching the ground system
- has little or no effect on the measured quantities, but
- this is NOT at maximum ground current (no even close).
-
- Obviously, my body's stray capacitance is changing the
- characteristics of the "ground" system. But why would
- the meter care? Obviously it would, and the radio's
- circuits would "see" something changing and react. Any
- guesses what's actually happening here?
-
- ---------------------------------------------------------
-
- Technical replies are welcome, the more the better.

-
- I think what you are talking about is "Trunked Land mobile radio." It is
- a system by which many users can share a group of freqs by having a computer
- at the transmitter control which freqs the radios use. They all listen to
- a data channel for instructions from the head unit. That way fire, rescue,
- police, etc can share 5-10 freqs and fully utilize them (and selectively
- intercommunicate) instead of having 25-50 separate rarely-used freqs laying
- around. Cell phone technology is very similar to trunked systems. See the
- description in Radio Shack's "Police Call".

- The Advanced exam is MUCH harder than the Extra exam. Heavy on the
- circuit analysis and calculations/formulae, light on the theory.
-
- As an Advanced class, your privileges are pretty similar to the
- General privs. But when you get to Extra, there's a significant
- jump, such as being able to launch satellites, be a VE for all
- classes, etc. Anyway, the General to Advanced jump is just a written
- test. Advanced to Extra is a two-parter, kind of a "double-filter"
- if you will.
-
- Advanced is much more difficult than Extra.
